"The Way the Valley Cares Community
By Community"
Newsletter Judged Best in the
Country
Annual Report, Leadership Materials also cited for
excellence

United Way of America has announced the Winners and Finalists of
the 2002 Communications Contest, and for the third time in recent years Valley United Way's newsletter has been named the winner in the Best Newsletter category. Additionally, the
2002 Annual Report and the materials developed for the 2002 Leadership Greater
Valley program were recognized as the only Finalists in the Best Annual Report
and Best Special Initiative Communication Materials categories. Valley United
Way's Awards came in Division 3 of the contest which covers United Ways the same
size as Valley United Way and smaller.
Jack Walsh, Executive Director of Valley United Way, praised the
work of Valley United Way's Marketing Committee for their work in creating a
plan and materials for Valley United Way. He said, "Rich Rosen and his committee
have been very creative in developing our materials and working to position our
United Way in the forefront of those working to effectively communicate
the value of United Way to their local communities. This year they incorporated
the branding concepts coming from United Way of America in their work. " He also noted that the
awards would not have been possible without the support of
Hasler, Inc. and
their marketing firm, Melanie Thompson
Creative Designs who did the design work for both the newsletter and the
annual report. Walsh also thanked
Pitney Bowes which
printed the annual report. "And special recognition goes to our Campaign
Director, Jane Snaider who staffed the committee and did all the work on the
local level to make the newsletter and annual report happen," Walsh added.

The Finalist Recognition in the "Best Special
Initiative Communication Materials" recognized the brochure which was developed
by the Dawn Tufano and
The Indigo Group for the Leadership Greater Valley program which was a joint
effort of the United Way, Valley Council for Health & Human Services and the
Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce. The program recruits, trains and places a
diverse group of individuals in volunteer leadership positions throughout the
Valley area. Walsh said, "The Leadership Program is a great example of the
collaboration that we have in the Valley, and Daun Tufano's design work gave us
a very attractive vehicle for promoting the program." He also noted that Tufano
was a previous graduate of the program!
