Ansonia Community ActionThe Corporate Volunteer Council, a program of Valley United Way's Volunteer Action Center, has completed its annual Week of Caring project at Ansonia Community Action Center in Ansonia. The Week of Caring is held annually in conjunction with the beginning of Valley United Way's annual fund raising campaign. Employees from all over the Valley donate their time and talent to make a real difference in the community. Click here to see some of the earlier projects. Ansonia Community Action, Inc. (ACA), is a non-profit, community based multi-service organization which serves the children, youth and families of Ansonia. ACA was founded in 1967 by a group of citizens discontented with housing and social problems within the city. ACA's mission is to provide a multi-service center for the City of Ansonia and assume the role of social advocate on issues which have an impact upon the human needs of the community. They provide services that meet those needs and lead people to self sufficiency. ACA also provides a safe, accountable environment, which encourages exploration and responsibility. Various activities such as arts and crafts, cooking, music, dance and athletics are offered. ACA not only provides a center for community activities, but it also offers a very successful after school program, an eight week summer program and an intergenerational program matching seniors over the age of 55 with children and youth ages 5-16. ACA also is a site for the Food Bank sponsored by Area Congregations Together. They also administer the Youth Service Bureau for the City of Ansonia and a Youth Employment Service. In addition, they are a site for the Valley Health District's well child clinic on a monthly basis. Tom Harry of Turner Construction will once again serve as Foreman for Week of Caring. As in the past, Tom's knowledge and expertise will help the CVC to map out a plan for such an enormous project and complete it in just one week. CVC volunteers will tackle a wide variety of tasks ranging from landscaping and gardening to applying gallons of paint to hallways, offices and large meeting room. The CVC believes that lives will be changed because they care. They care enough to sound the horn in their companies, roll up their sleeves, clear their calendars and get to work. Indeed they have earned praise in the Valley community as well as nationally. Earlier Week of Caring projects include renovating the Umbrella’s battered woman's shelter, the Spooner House (our local homeless shelter), Parent Child Resource Center, the Recreation Camp, Ansonia Nature Center and the Valley YMCA residency apartments.
