Forty members of Valley United Way's High School Volunteer
Council traveled to Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday May 11, 2005 to
celebrate another very successful year.
The day was a glorious picture perfect day in Boston. The major highlight of
the trip was the famous Duck Boat Tour. The tour gave an extensive view of
Boston along with an exceptional narration of Boston's great history. A
major highlight for several students was the opportunity to actually be the
Captain and drive. Another highlight was a trip to Quincy Market and Little
Italy.
The High School Volunteer is celebrating its Tenth Year Anniversary. This
Model Council is a national one-of-a-kind program which provides students
from the five city high schools the opportunity to interact with each other
to learn and practice leadership skills, to develop a wider knowledge of
community needs and to work on one major project a year that has a positive
impact on the Valley. This year the High School Volunteer Council hosted a
Holiday Kid Celebration in December.
Each month the students and two advisors from each school meet to share
their extensive list of volunteer activities which have such a positive
impact in the valley community.
At each meeting they listen to each other's activities and are quick to
share ideas and common practices. A plan is already underway for the start
up of the 2005-2006 school year. They plan to join together for the first
time and partner with the Corporate Volunteer Council during its Week of
Caring in September.
The High School Volunteer Council was honored as the 2005 Exemplary Youth
Group Volunteer of the Year Award during the annual Volunteer Recognition
Event on May 5, 2005 at Kellogg Environmental Center.
