Week of Caring

(SEPTEMBER 7 - 14TH 1996)

Valley United Way's fifth annual Week of Caring was held from September 7 to September 14. This year the Corporate Volunteer Council (CVC) of the United Way's Volunteer Action Center coordinated major renovations to the Parent Child Resource Center in Shelton. Nearly 200 volunteers from throughout the Valley participated.

The Corporate Volunteer Council is a coalition of local corporations which have active employee volunteer programs. Currently participating are: Black and Decker Co., Brennan Construction Co., Centerbank, CT Light and Power Co., Derby Savings Bank, Fleet Bank, General Electric Co., Griffin Hospital, Iroquois Gas Transmission, ITT Hartford Insurance, Philips Medical Systems, Pitney Bowes, Prudential Relocation, Rhone-Poulenc, Ryan Employment Services, Shady Knoll Health Center, Suburban Health Plan, Tele-Media of Western CT, The Greenwich Workshop, Turner Construction Co., United Illuminating, United Methodist Home, Valley Shopping Center, and Westinghouse Broadcasting.

Improvements at the Parent Child Resource Center were made on both the inside and the outside of the building. The volunteers tackled a wide variety of tasks, ranging from cleaning and gardening, to painting and landscaping. The exterior of the building was power washed, and the foundation was painted. Landscaping was completed with the planting of grass and flowers around the building. Children coming to PCRC for guidance and counseling will enjoy the addition of a sandbox, swing set and picnic table. The interior of the building was painted from top to bottom with windows being cleaned throughout and new window dressings being applied.

This project is another example of United Way through its Volunteer Action Center and the Corporate Volunteer Council helps to bring the community together and to find innovative ways of dealing with problems facing the community.
