A special day with special people

On a day when the nation paused to remember the terrible tragedy of September 11, 2001, volunteers from throughout the Valley played out a living tribute by volunteering their time and talents to continue with the renovation of the Tinney Center in Ansonia. In addition to the special Week of Caring t-shirts given to all volunteers, special American flag ribbons were passed out to everyone present during the day to remind them of the significance of the day. It was an especially moving day as relatives including his mother of former alderman and community activist Howard Tinney for whom the building is named came out in force to see the work and be part of the effort.

Wednesday marked the turning point in the project as most of the work in the main room including the installation of new storage space was completed by Automation Technologies. Volunteers from CAPS, First Union, Naugatuck Savings Bank, the Valley YMCA and Applica worked with area tenants to complete the painting of the new weight room, one of the bathrooms, and the education classroom. At least one coat of paint has been applied to every other room, and a new storage closet in the basement is under construction.  With two days to go, the end is in sight - and things are looking very good.

Volunteers were treated to refreshments by the Big Y Supermarket.
