United Way Responds To Kids Issue Keeping Kids on Track initiative School only accounts for twenty percent of a young person’s waking hours in a year. That leaves plenty of time for trouble. In fact, unsupervised children run a high risk of truancy, troublesome behavior, and substance abuse. Helping fill that eight-percent time void with positive activities is the impetus behind the United Way‘s Keeping Kids on Track Promotion. This initiative which was launched in 1997 by United Way of New England with support from Bell Atlantic, Liberty Mutual and Shaw’s Supermarkets, Keeping Kids on Track now funds more than 84 agencies throughout New England. The goal is to ensure that young people graduate from high school ready to lead a successful life. Focusing on seven to 18-year-olds, the goal of Keeping Kids on Track is to provide critical resources-mentoring, tutoring and recreational activities outside of school hours - to help kids stay healthy, safe and grow to their fullest potential. Shaw’ s Shelton Supermarket Takes Stake in Youth Initiative Shaw’s Sales Associates in Shelton raised $420 that will be used to sponsor the first annual Youth Congress in the Valley scheduled for the Spring of 2000. This event should be fun, but the main purpose of the event is to address important issues that face youth. The preliminary agenda for the event calls for workshops on Real Life Issues, Educational Issues and Entertainment.
