Shaw’s/Star Supermarkets raises

$1.8 million for United Way

Showing that their commitment to the community is as large as the geographic region they serve, Shaw’s/Star Supermarkets announced its associates and the company are contributing $1.8 million to United Ways across New England. The donation — the largest Shaw’s/Star Supermarkets has made to United Way — includes funds raised at Shaw’s/Star location in Shelton.

Jack Walsh, Executive Director of Valley United Way lauded the efforts of Shaw's and its employees. He said, "They did an outstanding job not only with their campaign, but also with their special efforts on behalf of children in the Valley. We appreciate all they have done for us since coming to the Valley".

The Shaw's in Shelton raised $6,887 in charitable giving. They also aided United Way by sponsoring the "Keep Kids on Track" Program which raised an additional $420 which will be used to fund the Valley's Youth Congress this spring. Click here to learn more.

Ross McLaren, President and Chief Executive Officer of Shaw’s/Star Supermarkets, presented the $1.8 million contribution — representing funds raised at approximately 175 locations — to John Hamill, chair of the 1999 United Ways of New England fund raising efforts. The contribution is the largest Shaw’s has made to United Way to date and represents an increase of over $250,000 over last year’s gift to United Way.

"We are very proud of the 30,000 associates of Shaw’s/Star Supermarkets who contributed these funds," said Mr. McLaren. "Their generosity to United Way shows their deep commitment to the communities we serve. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of thousands of children and families."
