![]() SCHOOL CAMPAIGNS UNDERWAY The beginning of the new school year also marks the beginning of the Annual United Way Community Campaign in all of the Valley school systems. Shelton, Derby and Seymour conducted their campaigns as part of their opening staff orientation sessions while Ansonia and Oxford are now conducting their campaigns. The Derby campaign was especially interesting this year as Danielle Hubbard of United Way's Youth Leadership program spoke to the teachers. That's something that the students have done for the last couple of years, and Sam Cho spoke to the teachers in Seymour this year. What made the Derby situation was the fact that Danielle's father, Marty Hubbard, just happens to be Chairman of the Board of Education and Derby and he was also on the speaking program welcoming the teachers back for another year. They both did a terrific job! The Derby teachers also learned of United Way's role in introducing Superintendent of Schools Janet Robinson to Queue, a local business who donated workbooks to every 4th grade student in Derby to help them prepare for CT state competency tests. They will be donating them again this year. Valley United Way has a strong commitment to the youth of the community and recently worked with its Corporate Volunteer Council to clothe 183 children for the new school year. They have also worked with the Valley Council's Early Childhood Committee to publish a directory of early childhood resources in the Valley. Last year teachers donated $34,910 to the Valley United Way. We thank them for their generosity.
