Hull Society Materials a National Winner!

United Way of America

Communications Contest 2000

Major and Planned Giving Materials - 2nd

When Valley United Way decided to make changes to its leadership giving program, it knew it had a major challenge. Former Assistant Director Vince Palacino worked diligently with the Marketing Committee to plan a completely redesigned effort to focus on the importance of leadership giving to the overall success of the community and to Valley United Way.

The Leadership Giving Society was renamed the Commodore Isaac Hull Society after the Derby native who commanded the USS Constitution - "Old Ironsides" - during one of the most famous naval battles in U.S. history. The committee then took on the challenge of designing materials that would reflect the leadership exemplified by Hull.

Design and layout was provided through the generous support of Ascom Hasler Mailing Systems. Ascom made their advertising agency, McCurdy & Partners, and their creative agency, Melanie Thomson Creative Design, available to provide technical assistance. They chose the nautical design that you see pictured here.

United Way Executive Director Jack Walsh lauded the committee for the work that they did. "Leadership giving is the fastest growing segment of our campaign, and we needed materials that would reflect on that importance and help us to better market this effort. The new materials have been a major contributor to our success".

He went on to thank the many donors who responded to the Hull Society appeal by providing significant support to United Way's annual campaign through leadership giving.
