CDWG Wins Healthy Team 2016Thaddeus Kurowski is healthiest once again

Thaddeus Kurowski and Ryan O’Donnell are the healthiest team in the 2016 Healthy Team competition.Thaddeus is no stranger to the Healthy Team event as this is the fourth time that he has won it – with four different partners. The duo racked up 149 points which was 11 more that runners up Amber Dobbin and John Yeager. BIC captured third and fourth place with Evelyn Spanolios & Sarah Donaldson and Paul Moriber & Margaret Katrenya. Griffin Hospital’s Brenda Cayer-McCarthy and AquieraHalsey rounded out the top five.

Twenty teams completed the Healthy Team this year while an additional 10 did not finish.

The Corporate Cup “Healthy Team” event is designed to promote your healthy lifestyle changes while allowing your company to receive recognition for encouraging these changes. As an added benefit, each Healthy Team participant receives a three-month membership (over $200 value) to the Valley YMCA for the duration of the Healthy Team competition.

Bonus Point Opportunities

One way to increase your chances of winning the Healthy Team competition is to earn bonus points, and here are a few opportunities while really improving your health at the same time. You can start accumulating points by attending the free Health talks at Griffin Hospital. As the events are scheduled, they will be posted here, and you can click on the program name to find out more or to make a reservation if required:



Patty Corrente and Christian Meagher of Griffin Hospital were the first to complete the 2015 Healthy Team Pre-Test and fittingly ended up as the winners when it finished.


Have all forms completed prior to arriving for the pre-test in February.

Each participating company will choose the desired number of two-person teams to participate in this event. Points will be awarded for certain healthy behaviors and for measured, positive physical changes, and for participating in other healthy events scheduled throughout the three-month competition. The key to choosing those participants “most likely to succeed” in this event is to find those who are the most highly-motivated to make healthy lifestyle changes.

There are six requirements for each team member to participate:

1.)   A written physician’s consent is required for each participant prior to the initial screening.

2.)   Each participant must go through an initial health screening and a final health screening. Refrain from eating for one hour prior to testing.

 3.)  Each Healthy Team must participate in at least one additional Corporate Cup event.

 4.)  Each participant must exercise three times weekly for a minimum of 30 minutes. An exercise diary will be provided at the pre-test. Participants are permitted to exercise at their own gym or fitness facility.

5.)  Each participant must participate in at least one Healthy Meal and maintain a food diary for a minimum of three consecutive days each month for the duration of the event. A food diary will be provided at the pre-test.

6.)  Each participant must complete a Participant Contract, to be submitted at post-testing. Healthy Team Physical Fitness Evaluation All Healthy Team participants are required to have a health screening prior to and upon completion of the event. Participants will be screened for blood pressure, weight, body fat content, blood cholesterol and HDL. A treadmill test will be used to determine cardiovascular fitness.  

Points will be awarded for improvements in these tested areas. Extra points will also be awarded for additional lifestyle modifications. A full listing of bonus point opportunities will be posted later. Post-test Requirements: All paperwork (photocopies, diaries, etc.) must be submitted at the post-test. No faxes or late submissions will be accepted.

Please call the Valley YMCA (203) 736-1435, for a pre-testing appointment prior to the pre-test date.

T-shirts will be distributed at the pre-test. You will be required to wear the issued shirt, along with shorts and sneakers, at both the pre-test and post-test. The day and time you pick for pre-testing in February will be the same for post-testing in May. Appointment schedules will be carefully followed, regulations will be adhered to and no exceptions are permitted.

Guidelines for Fitness Testing
1. Wear sneakers, shorts and a Healthy Team t-shirt for the fitness evaluation
2. Refrain from eating and drinking for one hour prior to evaluation (including coffee and tea)
3. Refrain from alcohol consumption for 24 hours prior to evaluation
4. Refrain from smoking for four hours prior to evaluation
5. Refrain from exercise seven hours prior to evaluation.

Testing took place in the Physical Medicine & Rehab Department, located in the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital and the Valley YMCA.
