PerkinElmer Wins Again!

Ricky Santorelli, John Och and Gossett Daley have given PerkinElmer their second straight Wiffleball title!

On a day when the world may have turned to the World Cup for some excitement, the Community Corporate Cup Wiffleball Tournament was full of drama and suspense as defending champion Perkin Elmer Athletics roared out of the Losers Bracket and posted an incredible - and somewhat improbable - 12-10 win over Griffin Hospital's 3 Amigos 12-10 in the title game. The 3 Amigos had been undefeated before PerkinElmer stopped them 3-0 to force the "if" game for the championship. PerkinElmer seemed to be in command with another 3-0 lead until Griffin staged a magical 8 run rally to take an 8-3 lead heading into the final inning - but it wasn't quite enough. PerkinElmer was down to their last strike and trailing by four when they erupted for eight more runs to take a lead of 12-8. Griffin had one more shot as they batted last and they cut the final margin to 12-10 before finally falling.

United Illuminating, which earlier had defeated Perkin Elmer 7-6 on a dramatic last inning walk-off grand slam homer, finished third on the day. Fletcher Thompson also made a strong run through the Losers Bracket with three straight wins before falling to Perkin Elmer 3-0 for a fourth place finish.

PerkinElmer topped Griffin Hospital's Team Ron Brown 16-0 before their stunning loss to UI. However they didn't let that bother them for long as they rolled over CDW-G 10-2, nipped the Perkin Elmer Sox 6-5 and shut out Fletcher Thompson 3-0 setting up the title match with Griffin. Pitcher John Och pitched consecutive 3-0 shutouts and baffled hitters with his high, dropping curve ball.

Griffin's run to the title game was full of suspense as they followed a bye with an 8-3 win over Fletcher Thompson. Trailing Spectrum Plastics 1-0 and down to their final out, Justin Pereiras hit a walk-off grand slam and a 4-1 win sending them on to a 4-1 win over United Illuminating in the Winners Bracket final.
