Local FEMA Awards Announced

The Valley will be receiving $27,663 as part of the Phase XVII funding under the Federal Emergency Management Act over the next 12 months thanks to recent regional awards. The funds are earmarked for emergency food, shelter, rent and utility costs and will be administered by Area Congregations Together, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, TEAM, Inc., and the Umbrella.

Valley United Way serves as the local coordinator and represents the Valley at Regional meetings in Bridgeport and New Haven. Valley United Way Executive Director Jack Walsh lauded the spirit of cooperation among the local agencies providing services. United Way convenes the annual meetings of service providers in the Valley at which time they discuss local needs and develop the local funding distribution. "The local agencies work together to make sure that the funds are allocated to get the best possible use," he said, "Funding decreased more than 10% this year, so it was more important than ever that they cooperate to make sure that the funds provide the greatest possible benefit to the community." As in the past, most of the money is dedicated to shelter and food with a very limited amount available for rent and utility assistance.

Following the deliberations of the local group and the regional committees in Bridgeport and New Haven, the following awards were made:
