CHARLES H. FLYNN HUMANITARIAN AWARD

The 1985 Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award

In recognition of "outstanding volunteer leadership" in the Lower Naugatuck Valley 

George Berman was born in Derby in 1911. He graduated from Derby High School in 1930 where he was an outstanding athlete.

He earned his bachelor of science degree from Arnold College in 1934 where he was captain of both the football and gym teams.

He received his masters of administration degree from New York University in 1935.

During his student years he served as waterfront director at the Recreation Camp, until he entered the family business, H. Berman & Sons, Inc., better known as The Model, a successful retailing establishment.

During World War II Berman served with distinction as a camouflage specialist with the 8th Air Force. He was discharged in 1945 with the rank of technical sargeant.

Upon his return from the service he resumed his duties with the family business and later became president.

He continued his activities in the community as well.

He was a director of the Recreation Camp and a member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, King Hiram Lodge, AF & AM, Beth Israel Synagogue Center and a corporator of Griffin Hospital.

He was a member of the Housatonic Valley Clean Water League, the National and Connecticut Sierra Clubs and many other environmental groups.

He won numerous community awards including the Gold Seal from the Lower Naugatuck Valley Chamber of Commerce.
