The 1980 Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award
In recognition of "outstanding volunteer leadership" in the Lower Naugatuck Valley Joseph Doyle was born in New Haven, but moved to Ansonia at an early age. He went to Assumption School and graduated from Ansonia High school in 1939. He worked at the then American Brass Company until he entered the service in 1942. He served as a sergeant in the Army Air Force in the European Theater of Operations and was discharged after the end of World War II. He returned to Ansonia and became active in community affairs. He became clerk of the Board of Assessors and served in that position for many years. When floods hit the Valley in August and October of 1955, Doyle became chairman of the Red Cross Disaster Allocations Committee. A year later he was elected Mayor of Ansonia. He served his community in that capacity until 1967 when he was appointed postmaster. Doyle was employed as a senior sales correspondent at the B.F. Goodrich Company in Shelton from 1957 until he entered the Postal Service. His volunteer activities began after his return home from the service. He was chairman of the Valley Veterans Council in 1946-47 and secretary-treasurer of the Comcowich-Carter Post Building Association in its successful quest for a home for the Ansonia post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was active in the Ansonia Community Chest and assisted in the negotiations for the creation of the Valley United Fund. He was a trustee of Griffin Hospital, was an organizer of the Valley Community Council and served on the board of the Valley Homemakers Association and served in the Assumption Church Parish Council. He was a member of the Connecticut National Bank advisory board and chairman of the Emmett O'Brien Regional Vocational Technical High School advisory board. He was a director of the Valley YMCA and Catholic Family Services, both United Way agencies. He served, as well, on the Advisory board of Julia Day Nursery. He was a member of the Ansonia Rotary Club, the Knights of Columbus, VFW Catholic War Veterans, Naugatuck Valley branch of the Supreme Anchor Club and the National Association of Postmasters. He was a service officer of the VFW since 1949 and served on the United Way's Budget Committee for several years. He was a recipient of the Lower Naugatuck Valley Chamber of Commerce Gold Seal Award in 1977. He was also a recipient of the Valley Bar Association's Liberty Bell Award.
