The 1988 Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award
In recognition of "outstanding volunteer leadership" in the Lower Naugatuck Valley Fr. McKenna was ordained at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Hartford in December 1945. He had numerous assignments during his career and served as pastor, chaplain and school principal in a number of parishes in Fairfield County during his years in the priesthood. His first assignment was at St. Ann's in Bridgeport where he served for ten years. He was at St. Joseph's Church in Shelton for 16 years. After his retirement he undertook the establishment of the St. Vincent DePaul Society in Shelton. He also ministered to the residents of Marshall Lane Manor in Derby and organized a number of activities for the patients there. He was very active in visiting patients at Griffin Hospital bringing cheer to all regardless of their faiths. He reached out to the needy regardless of where they might be and served such varied causes as Indians in Alaska and South Dakota; the blind; runaway children; the homeless of New York State; as well as the handicapped. His service to the local community was highlighted by his ministering to those that were affected by the B.F. Goodrich Sponge Rubber Company fire. Learn more about the Charles H.
