The 1983 Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award
In recognition of "outstanding volunteer leadership" in the Lower Naugatuck Valley Rev. Schuster was the chairman of the Valley Catchment Area Council for Mental Health and that led to his being president of the Regional Mental Health Board in 1978 and 1979. He served as chairman of the planning committee for the Lower Naugatuck Valley Community Mental Health Center and served as chairman of the Committee on Evaluation and the Regionalization for the State Department of Mental Health in 1979. He also served as chairman of the Management Committee for Public Health Nursing and Homemaker Services and was the President of that organization in 1980 and 1981. He also served as a director of Catholic Family Services for several years and was a director of the Lower Naugatuck Valley Community Council. As a member of a local clergy group, he was one of the founders of Area Congregations Together and a corporator of Griffin Hospital. He was the chaplain for the Hotchkiss Hose Company and the Connecticut State Police. He was chairman of the Community Mobilization Team of the Ansonia Police Department and chairman of the Interfaith Emergency Housing Shelter Committee. He also served as chairman of Operation Thanksgiving and Operation Christmas and was a convener of the Valley Food Bank Network. He was a three term trustee of his almamater, Berkeley Divinity School and a member of the Ansonia Rotary Club. In 1981 he was a recipient of the Valley Chamber of Commerce Gold Seal Award.
