The 2000 Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award
William C. Bassett
In recognition of "outstanding volunteer leadership" in the Lower Naugatuck Valley
William C. Bassett is the winner of the 2000 Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian award presented by Valley United Way. He is the President of the W. E. Bassett Company in Shelton and has been an extremely active member of the Valley community. He has provided his time and expertise in a variety of roles to many organizations serving the Valley and has also done the same in his hometown of Southbury.
United Way Executive Director Jack Walsh said, "Bill Bassett's selection as this year's winner adds to the luster of this unique community award. As with all of his predecessors, Bill is a person who has provided personal leadership in making this a better community". Walsh noted that on the very day that the selection committee called him, Bill was spending time at Valley United Way providing a training program for members of the Valley Council of Health and Human Service Organizations L.E.A.D. program which trains people to serve in volunteer leadership positions in the Valley.
While running one of the Valley's leading businesses which has a world-wide market, Bassett finds the time to serve as Board Chair for both the Birmingham Group and Communicare, Inc. He is also a board member at Hewitt Memorial Hospital and the Shelton Economic Development Commission. He is also the Board Secretary for the Oak Cliff Cemetery Association and an Advisory Board Member for the Center for Family Business at the University of New Haven. Bill is also a member of the Church Council for the United Church of Christ in Southbury. He is also a corporator at Griffin Hospital and Valley United Way.
In the past he has been a board member of many other groups including the Valley Substance Abuse Action Council, the Valley Chamber of Commerce, Connecticut Trails Council of Girl Scouts, the Valley Council on Alcoholism and Great Country Bank.
Bill is married to Judith Prasse and they have three children - Lynne who is married to Craig Perry; Elizabeth who is married to Anthony DePaolo; and William H. Bassett.
