The Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award Committee has
selected Julius I. Douglas as the recipient of the 1997 Award. Douglas joins a long
line of individuals who have distinguished themselves, serving as examples to others in
the Valley through their selfless commitment to "giving back to community."
The award was presented at the United Way's Annual Meeting on March 25.
Douglas is a retired public school educator, having taught art in the
Westport Public Schools for twenty-six years. He graduated from Ansonia High School and
holds B.A. in Art from Southern Connecticut State University and an M.A. in Art from the
University of Bridgeport.

currently serving as an elected member of the Ansonia Board of Education, a Sunday School
Teacher at Macedonia Baptist Church, Youth Director of the Copper City Lodge of Elks, and
a member of the Advisory Board of Valley United Way's Youth Leadership Program.
His long standing commitment to the Valley has been recognized over the

him with its "Outstanding Service Award." He received testimonial recognition
from the Copper City Lodge of Elks Drill Team Reunion Committee, in 1979, for twenty-two
years of service to the Team. In 1990, the Copper City Elks Youth Department presented him

Christ honored him in 1995 at its "Heritage Honoree Dinner."
