The Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award Committee has selected Julius I. Douglas as the recipient of the 1997 Award. Douglas joins a long line of individuals who have distinguished themselves, serving as examples to others in the Valley through their selfless commitment to "giving back to community."  The award was presented at the United Way's Annual Meeting on March 25.

Douglas is a retired public school educator, having taught art in the Westport Public Schools for twenty-six years. He graduated from Ansonia High School and holds B.A. in Art from Southern Connecticut State University and an M.A. in Art from the University of Bridgeport.

Long active in the Valley community, Douglas has served as a Board member of TEAM, Inc., the Lower Naugatuck Valley Day Care Center, the South Central Connecticut Agency on Aging, and Valley United Way.

He is a life member of the NAACP and the Connecticut Education Association. He currently serves as Vice President of the Ansonia Community Development Forum, Vice President of the NAACP, a committee member of the Healthy Valley 2000 Project, and Chair of the Julian A. Taylor Scholarship Committee

In addition to his involvement with youth as a teacher, Douglas has always had a strong commitment to working with and for youth. This is exemplified by his currently serving as an elected member of the Ansonia Board of Education, a Sunday School Teacher at Macedonia Baptist Church, Youth Director of the Copper City Lodge of Elks, and a member of the Advisory Board of Valley United Way's Youth Leadership Program.

His long standing commitment to the Valley has been recognized over the years by a number of organizations. In 1989, the Olsen Drive Tenants Association presented him with its "Outstanding Service Award." He received testimonial recognition from the Copper City Lodge of Elks Drill Team Reunion Committee, in 1979, for twenty-two years of service to the Team. In 1990, the Copper City Elks Youth Department presented him with its "Appreciation/Service Award" and the Evangel Temple Church of God In Christ honored him in 1995 at its "Heritage Honoree Dinner."

Douglas lives in Ansonia with his wife, Anna M. Thomas Douglas. They have two grown children, Maco and Lydia.

Attorney Gregory Stamos was the chair of the 1997 selection committee. Other members of the commitee included Susan Kowalczyk, Dave Grant, and Madeleine Sobin.
