The 1998 Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award
William M. "Bing" Miller In recognition of "outstanding volunteer leadership" to the Lower Naugatuck Valley William M. (Bing) Miller has been selected by the Flynn Humanitarian Award Committee as the recipient of the 1998 Award. A life long resident of the Valley, Miller was born in Derby. He was a founder of the Miller Agency and guided the agency through forty years of growth before retiring in 1990. Miller served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1946. He then attended Dartmouth College where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree. After graduating, he returned home to the Valley and has spent countless hours volunteering. His focus has been to help the youth and elderly of the Valley. He has held leadership positions with the Hewitt Organization, as a Trustee and Board Chair of Hewitt Memorial Hospital and a member of the Board of Directors of the Hewitt Foundation. He has also served on the Board of Valley United Way and the Lower Naugatuck Valley Boys & Girls Club, serving as President in 1965-66. Miller has been active in assisting the Boys & Girls Club in its building project, to replace the facility that was destroyed by fire several years ago. He currently serves as Assistant Treasurer and on the Project Management Committee for the new building. Always involved in helping to support the Valleys nonprofits with his time, Miller has also supported the Valleys human and social services agencies financially. He served as Campaign Chair of Valley United Ways 1976 Annual Campaign, served as a Trustee and Treasurer of the Friend A. Russ Fund, and a Director of the William and Vera Todd Scholarship Fund. He also served on the Finance Board of St. Joseph Church in Shelton. Miller has been recognized by the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce with its Gold Seal Award and by the Boys & Girls Club with its Service to Youth Award. Miller becomes the 28th recipient of the Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award. Miller lives in Shelton with his wife, Joyce. They have three grown children and six grandchildren.
