Norman K. Santa

In recognition of "outstanding volunteer leadership" in the Lower Naugatuck Valley

Norman K. Santa of Shelton has been presented the 2001 Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award for a lifetime of volunteer service to the community. 

Tom Sutnik, President of Valley United Way, praised the selection of Santa as an individual who has spent a lifetime in helping to make the Valley a better place to live. He said, "Norm has been a success in everything he has done, but has always found ways to stay involved in the community while building a successful business and raising a family."

Norm is retired from the family corporation after working for 41 years specializing in construction and maintenance of buildings, water front property and oil terminals.  He continues to serve as a Director of Santa Holding Company, Admiral Associates, Santa Fuel, Inc., Inland Fuel Terminals, Inc. and Buckley Energy Group.

Norm's community service has been prolific. He has served as member and president of the Board of Aldermen in Shelton as well as member and vice chair of the Shelton Inland Wetland commission. He also served on the city's Employees Board and is a Director of the Shelton Economic Development Commission.

Always a supporter of children in the community, he has found time to be a mentor in the Shelton School System, Director and President of the Housatonic Council, Boy Scouts of America and Director and Chair of the Nominating and Building Committees for the Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley.

He is currently a Director with the Hewitt Foundation and is a Corporator at Griffin Hospital and with the Valley United Way.

Norm is also a charter member and past president of both the Huntington-Shelton Exchange Club and the H. B. Brownson Country Club. 

A U.S. Marine combat veteran of  the Korean War ,he has been Director and Treasurer of the Navy League of  Greater Bridgeport. He is also a Life Member of the Korean War Veterans  Association as well as the Sutter-Terlizzi Post of the American Legion and the Shang Wheeler Barracks of the VFW in Stratford.

Norm has been a Shelton resident since 1956. He and his wife Janet have four children and four grand children.

The award was presented at Valley United Ways Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner on March 27.
