Valley United Way’s Corporate Volunteer Council (CVC) hosted an introductory social for companies looking to learn more about community volunteer programs. Katie Scinto hosted the event in Tower 1, inside Shelton’s corporate park, and provided hors d’oeuvres, complimented by wine and assorted cheeses. Harry Burlakoff, of Minuteman Press, also provided a light dinner for attendees from Pasta Fina of Shelton. The purpose of this event was to host a meet and greet for companies interested in joining the CVC. The event also provided a social forum to CVC companies to socialize with one another outside the board room. CVC meetings are regularly held on the 3rd Thursday of each month at a different CVC member’s company. Prospective members were able to network with those currently in the CVC and learn more about community programs and initiatives during a brief and informal CVC meeting, led by Co-Chairs Rose Gurn of Pitney Bowes and Lynn Kieley of Newtown Savings Bank. In addition to providing attendees with a summary of the CVC, the Co-Chairs reviewed two of the annual premier programs – Week of Caring and Back to School Clothes-for-Kids. Dan Fitzgerald, CVC Membership Team Leader from Basement Systems, also spoke about the benefits of participating in the CVC’s community projects and how his involvement has helped his company. Each year, Valley United Way organizes a Week of Caring during the late summer months. In the past 15 years, in-kind gifts and donated cash has totaled just under $1 million. Back to School Clothes-for-Kids, is a program that allows companies to adopt a child living at or below the poverty line and provide them with the clothing and school supplies in an effort to boost confidence. The Back to School program has helped over 2,057 students and will assist 200 students in Shelton’s elementary schools this year. The total amount of clothing and school supplies given to students to date is equivalent to approximately $400,000. The CVC is aiming to host a similar event once each quarter. The next CVC Social is expected to take place sometime in October.
