1998-1999 Youth Leadership ProgramThe Youth Leadership Program finished off a successful 1998-1999 program year by announcing its annual allocations and planning for a new mentoring component to the program. Youth leadership is open to students living in the Valley who attend either public or private high schools. Those individuals who are interested in being a part of the program submit applications are interviewed by current members. Following selection of the students, a Member Parent Reception is held to recognize graduating seniors and present. The reception marks the end of one program year and the beginning of the new one. Training for the new program gets under way with an annual Teambuilding Retreat at Hartford YMCA's Camp Jewell in Colebrook. This year's weekend will be in April. The retreat represents the official kickoff of the program year and all other activities of the year grow out of the retreat. Training continues throughout the year leading to the groups annual needs assessment and allocation process. Program members identify issues of concern and then allocate approximately $3,000 to community groups working on those issues.
Community ServiceAnother component of the program is community service. Students are required to complete five hours a month in volunteer service to the community. That service can be in either individual or group service. Check out a couple of activities below: Postal Service Food Drive Grandparents Day |
